Neighborhood Heroes on the Art Wall at the Nieuwe Luxor

The exhibition “Neighborhood Heroes” is currently on display along the so-called “lazy staircase” in the Nieuwe Luxor. It is a photography project by the IKBENWIJ Foundation, founded by social entrepreneur Lorenzo Elstak, featuring photographs by Linette Bas.   The exhibition showcases Rotterdam residents who are dedicated to their neighborhoods and the people around them—people who often go above and beyond for others without seeking recognition. Behind every photo lies a personal story of commitment, responsibility, and making a difference in the neighborhood.

“Neighborhood Heroes” originated with young people from Rotterdam-Zuid. They set out to find residents who make a difference in their community. The young people interviewed and filmed these neighborhood heroes and share their stories from their own perspective on the city.

The exhibition features, among others, Rosa Leona, Alejandro, Alicja, Hans, Rafik, and Robert Kwist (from left to right at the bottom of this page).

  • Rosa organizes activities for women in the neighborhood and brings people together.
  • Alegandro supports young people in Bloemhof and ensures they feel heard.
  • Alicja uses art and creativity in activities for young people and seniors.
  • Hans organizes neighborhood activities in Carnisse to bring residents together.
  • Rafik mentors young people as a kickboxing coach and works on building their self-confidence and discipline.
  • As a teacher,Robert is committed to fostering respect, structure, and positive development among young people.
