Breakin’ Convention

Representing the internationally renowned crew ILL-Abilities, b-boys Redo (NL) & Samuka (BR) will perform their powerful duet, BROKEN SOURCE, for the very first time in The Netherlands!  Born from their experiences of navigating physical adversity, Broken Source explores what happens when the things that break us become the very things that shape us. From the streets to the world stage, both artists have challenged expectations of what a body can do, while building their own language through breaking and hip hop culture. “Crutches are used, then discarded as these super powered, highly technical breakers Samuka and Redo bless the stage with a mesmerising duet “Broken Source.” – Jonzi D

TRAPLORD is an Olivier Award-winning production by choreographer and cultural innovator Ivan Michael Blackstock (UK), exploring cycles of life, death, and rebirth through a visceral fusion of dance, theatre, and spoken word.  “A raw and explosive ensemble performance examining young black men at risk. Intense movement, awkward monologues, sick trap beats blended with powerful rap and spoken word. Ivan creates a world unseen, but recognisable. ” – Jonzi D

Please note: This performance is recommended for audiences over 16+. This age guidance is at the discretion of the accompanying parent/guardian. This production contains strobe lighting, vaping and strong language and themes of violence, identity and mental health.

Rubix grew up in a family of dancers in Paris, and by the age of five, he was already competing in his first dance battle. Rubix also was the young main character in Stromae’s world famous video “Papaoutai”. Instantly drawn to improvisation and storytelling through movement, The Criminalz Crewmember quickly rose through Paris’s vibrant hip-hop scene, earning an international reputation for his unique style. Especially for Breakin’Convention Rotterdam Rubix will create a new solo.

Crime Time (NL) is a multidisciplinary Hip Hop crew that fuses the energy of street styles with the imaginative power of theater and music. Drawing on styles such as hip-hop, breakdance, krump and litefeet, they command a broad and powerful movement vocabulary. Raw honesty, vulnerability, and strength collide in their performance “Is it a crime”, revealing the tension between who we are and who we are expected to be.

World of Afro (NL) is founded by dancer and choreographer Precious Alvares, passionately dedicated to the diverse Modern African street styles with danceclasses, performances and a soundsystem. In 2024 the crew won Holland Got Talent. At Breakin’Convention, four dancers and a saxophone player will play an excerpt from their theatershow “Rebuild, a Black Woman’s Story”, that celebrates young black women’s perseverance in a world full of chaos, uncertainty and trauma.

Representing the energetic style Litefeet in The Netherlands, Until Further Notice (NL) has performed at events such as “Kwaku” & “Higher Frequencies”, “Orokana” and Breakin’ Convention NL 2024 where they captured the audiences with their infectious and raw energy. This time they are returning with an even larger crew, a new generation that got inspired by the Litefeet movement. In their showcase “No Litefeet allowed” they address the societal prejudice that comes with raw forms of expression. How will the new generation deal with that judgement?
